The Influence of Grammatical Gender on the Bimodal Perception of Bulgarian Nouns
The article is devoted to the issue of the bimodal (audiaL and visual) perception of the category of grammatical gender of nouns in Bulgarian language. The category of grammatical gender has a high degree of formalization representation of the categorical opposition. The study was performed in line with the cognitive paradigm. The authors experimentally tested the hypothesis about the category of gender. It is assumed that the category of gender, which has a high degree of formal expression in the language, influences the process of multimodal perception. On the basis of the experiment, the authors conclude that there are differences in the cognitive processing of the meanings of words of masculine and feminine gender in the Bulgarian language. This is confirmed by conclusions, made on a different material, about a higher degree of automatism of perception of unmarked members of semantic oppositions (in this case masculine nouns). The results are also consistent with the theory of the influence of the type of information on the cognitive processing of a sign in multimodal perception, even when this information is not in the focus of voluntary attention.
