Russia and Circassia: the problems of mutual relations and their features (the late 18th - the early 19th centuries)
The article on the basis of archival materials, including introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, describes the facts and events associated with the problems of mutual relations between the Russian administration in the Caucasus with Circassian tribes. The article uses testimonies of authors of works of the XIX century and archival documents and office materials of the chief of Black Sea coastline, stored in the State archive of the Krasnodar region (Krasnodar, Russian Federation). The authors concluded that the civil war in Circassia at the end of the XVIII century had the consequence of the losing power by the noble clans, and at the same time it predetermined the subsequent changes in the relationships of highlanders with the Russian administration. The dialogue between the Circassians and the Russian authorities developed under the cooperation initiatives of the highlanders. The features inherent to the separate Circassian tribes played wherein an important role. The situation in terms of ongoing Caucasian war, external influences, positions of the separate highland societies, subjective factors - the lack of coherence and discord of separate princely clans, all this, did not ultimately give the desired results in which the collaborating parties were objectively interested.
