The toponym Moldavia: ancient recollections and new etymologies

The article is dedicated to one of the most important and interesting scholarly questions of Moldavian history, geography and linguistics - the toponym Moldavia. The question regarding the research in the 16th-20th crnturies. As well as the current presentation and new proposals regarding the etymology of the toponyms, which are widely spread throughout Central Europe, are reviewed. The geography of the toponyms derived from the root Moldav / Moldov is researched in detail. Three basic hypotheses and common approaches with regard to the historic-geographic reconstructions which allow for an understanding of the paths of the appearance and distribution of similar derivations of geographical names are proposed. The widespread distribution of the given toponymical base in Central Europe - from the Alps to the Black Sea region. At the same time its exact geographical coinciding with the Carpatho-Balkan areal is established. The western toponymical areal and history of the recollection of the toponyms are reviewed in detail. Special attention is given to the most ancient recollections. Together with the "Saxon" and "Bohemian" hypotheses, preference is given to the "Gothic"
