Review of the book "The great war of 1914-1918 and the Ukraine" (vol. 1. Kiev, 2014; vol. 2. Kiev, 2015)

The contents of this work of Ukrainian authors and its basic tenures are reviewed. The authors analyze the position of the Central Powers and the Entante States regarding the question of the possibility of forming an independent Ukrainian state after WWI. They come to the conclusion that the formation of an independent Ukraine did not enter into their plans. They look into the situation in Galicia during the war but the authors do not come to an unanimous opinion about the role of the Russian administration in 1914-1915. They present facts about the organization of help for the population and at the same time write about the hardships of life under the conditions of the «Russian occupation». The activity of Ukrainian social organizations, their struggle in the formation of a Ukrainian state are reviewed. The authors note that during the war years there was a formation of a national identification of Ukrainian but also show that the process was complicated and was varied in different regions. Not all of the population aimed to identify itself as Ukrainian.
