The Status of Slavic Languages at the Universities of Austria-Hungary in the late 19th - early 20th centuries (A Case Study of the Magazine "Slavic Century")
The article examines the struggle of the Slavic youth for the consolidation of the status of native languages in Austro-Hungarian universities in late 19th - early 20th centuries, reflected in the magazine "Slavic Century" On the example of Lviv University the authors analyse the causes of language conflict at universities focusing on the forms and methods used by Rusin students of Lviv University to fight for their right to use the Rusin language, along with the Polish, in the educational process. The authors demonstrate how these forms and methods were evaluated by the representatives of the Slavic community. The article analyses the basic requirements of Slavic public youth organizations in the context of their struggle for the status of Slavic languages at the universities of Austria-Hungary, as well as the students' fight for the opening of national universities. It is noted that the requirements of Rusin, Czech, and Slovenian youth to establish new national universities or transform the old ones often led to ethnic clashes. The authors conclude that the struggle became a consolidating factor for the Slavs living in Austria-Hungary.
