The origin of the myth about the creation of the Galician principality by the Hungarian king Stephen II for his step-brother Boris Kalmanovich
There is no reliable information about the origin of the Galician Principality. The WielkopoLska Chronicle contains vague information about a Coloman, who was appointed the "King" of the Galicians by Bolestaw III Wrymouth and some unnamed Hungarian king. J.-H. Engel used this information in the Late 18th century to create a historiographical myth that the Galician Principality was created especially for Boris Kalmanovich (c. 1114 - с. 1156), a grandson of Vladimir Monomakh and an unrecognized claimant to the Hungarian throne. Although Engel's theory obviously served the interests of the Habsburgs, who claimed all the "Hungarian heritage", it was based on the Russian Chronicles translated into German by I.B. Scherer that contained no information about the early history of Galicia.
