The losses of the Russian army in Transcaucasia during the Russo-Turkish War (1828-1829): the historical-statistical study

The paper discusses the losses of the Russian army in Transcaucasia during the Russo-Turkish war of 1828-1829, paying attention to the theatre of military operations as well as the epidemiological situation in the region. The authors study the battles during the Russo-Turkish war of 1828-1829, defining major clashes and average daily losses. The paper is based on the archival documents of the Central State Historical Archives of Georgia (Tbilisi, Georgia), statistical data on losses from other sources, memoirs of the conflict participants and data of recent academic publications. The authors employ traditional methods of analysis, synthesis, concretisation, generalisation and other methods, of which the statistical method is of great importance, as it is used to calculate the ratio of the killed to the wounded, and average daily losses of Russian troops. The authors conclude that during the Russo-Turkish war of 1828-1829, the Caucasian separate corps of General Paskevich, with 16 883 soldiers, lost 4 361 persons that accounts for 25,8 % of the total number of military personnel. The conflict lasted for 506 days. The average daily losses on the Caucasian military theatre were as follows: 1,8 killed; 6,6 wounded and 0,1 missing. The total loss was 8,5 people per day. Due to the anti-epidemic measures, the plague of 1828-1829 had no significant impact on the military operations.
