The Ciscarpathian refugees to the Don Cossack host in 1914-1920 (following the funds of the Rostov Region State Archive)
This article discusses the activities of government and public organisations to provide refugees to the Don Cossack Host during the First World War. The research is based on the data from the funds of the Rostov Region State Archive and limited chronologically by 1914-1920, which is determined by the specificity of the activities of the governmental and non-governmental organisations to ensure the material and spiritual needs of internally displaced people in their new place of residence. The study of official statistical reports of government and national refugee organisations has revealed a simple list of nationalities: Russians, Poles, HaLychynians and Latvians, while other nations can be met episodically. This list is broadly consistent with the list of the most active national public organizations operating on the Don and participating in the work of the collective bodies for refugee assistance, with Halychynians standing out from this list. The records of the Cherkasy regional ataman mention Rusins instead of Halychynians. It is typical that the records of refugees specify not nationalities of the Carpathian region, but the Orthodox Dioceses and churches where they came from. The analysis of the assistance provided for the refugees shows that all types of assistance were provided by the government to people regardless of their nationality. Certain peculiarities can be traced only in the provision of religious needs. The list of nationalities in the official records corresponds to the main religious denominations, which explains the fact that only four main nationalities are found in the official reports. Thus, the term "Halychynian" can be described as predominantly religious, including Rusins from other western provinces of Russia.
