Organisations of Galician and Ugrian Rusins in the USA in the late 19th century
The article discusses the emergence and initial stage of the activity of the first public and religious organisations of East Slavic immigrants from Austria-Hungary to the USA in the late 19th century. It focuses on three largest organisations: The Greek Catholic Union (GCU), the Russian National Union (RNU) and the Russian Orthodox Catholic Mutual Aid Society (ROCMAS). These fairly large organisations that finally embraced the entire North American continent originated from a network of small brotherhoods and similar local structures that contributed much to the religious life of immigrants through opening the first Uniate parishes and, subsequently, to the movement for transition to the Russian Orthodox Church. The authors emphasize that both brotherhoods and larger organisations were founded primarily to satisfy the material and social needs of immigrants who had many difficulties adapting to the American society. Many Americans were wary of and even hostile to the Slavs (and generally of immigrants from Eastern, Central and Southern Europe). The authors conclude that the differences (and, consequently, tension) between the GCU, the NRU and the ROCMAS originated from religious and ethnic / ethnopolitical factors. However, they had much in common in terms of organizational structures, since they pursued identical goals in non-political and non-religious spheres of life and were often initiated by the same people.
