Russian monarchists of the early twentieth century about the situation of the Orthodox population in Western Provinces

The article deals with the activity of the Slavonic-Russian population in Russian western provinces through the lens of the works of well-known right-wing publicists, public figures, and politicians. Drawing on the works of the right-wing publicists and politicians (Black Hundreders), the author focuses on the socio-economic situation as well as socio-political, religious and cultural life of the Orthodox population in the western provinces within the chronological framework from 1900, when the first BlackHundred organisation - the Russian Assembly - was established, to the end of the 1920s. In their works and public speeches, Russian right-wing publicists and politicians defended the rights of the Slavic-Russian population in the western provinces, condemned discrimination on national and religious grounds spread in the western provinces of the Russian Empire. Moreover, not all monarchists supported P.A. Stolypin's bill on introducing township Zemstvos into the Russian western provinces, believing that this measure would be ineffective and even harmful. Many monarchists were also alarmed by the government's plans to implement the wholesale rough Russification of western provinces. They rightly believed that the idea to tar everyone with the same brush was harmful per se and could lead to unforeseen negative reprecussions.
