The Czechoslovak Press of 1919-1938 about Subcarpathian Rus
The article examines the position of the Rusins as well as political and social conditions in Subcarpathian Rus in 1919-1938 as reflected by the Czechoslovak press, namely the two main dailies on the left and right side of the political spectrum. The authors analyze the discursive elements of the Czechoslovak Lidove noviny (a rightwing pro-government newspaper) and Rude pravo (a left-wing, predominantly antigovernment newspaper). Subcarpathian Rus was a subject of peace negotiations after the collapse of Austria-Hungary in WWI, and its territory was annexed in 1919 to the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic. The political representation of the Rusins in America made a significant contribution to this decision. The agreement at the international level implied a guarantee of the autonomous rights of Subcarpathian Rus in Czechoslovakia, which was enshrined in the Czechoslovak Constitution. In fact, however, Subcarpathian Rus did not receive autonomy.
