Following Egill: the nidstong in contemporary Iceland (the second half of the 20^th to the early 21^st centuries)

Drawing on the mass media reports, interviews and internet sources, the article looks at the revival of the ‘nidstong’ medieval ritual in Iceland since the 1970s. If, in the Middle Ages, the nidstong was used as a ritualized insult pointing to someone’s effeminacy which had a magical effect on the insulted, in the second half of the 20^th century, though, it became a recurrent element of mass protests against Icelandic government’s policy and environmental pollution. The Egil’s Saga was used as a prototype for the nidstong ritual that resulted in the unification of this ritual compared with other medieval descriptions. Being originally a magical ritual, the nidstong has now turned into a form of protest against non-respect of the Icelanders’ interests and into a performance in a sense and a way to manifest the Icelandic identity. Nevertheless, despite this transformation, the meaning of the nidstong remains essentially the same, that is, to accuse someone of violating social norms and moral obligations.
