Peripheral feminine nouns: what is the difference between «paradnaya» and «naryadnaya», «uchitjelskaya» and «parikmaherskaya»
The paper represents a typology of substantivation. According to postulates of the transitivity theory, the author interprets substantivation as a result of interaction between parts of speech in the modern Russian language and considers substantivates as syncretic phenomena combining adjective properties with substantive. The author defines five types of usual substantivization: 1) contextual; 2) situational; 3) medial; 4) deep; 5) quasi-substantivization. These types are distinguished by the degree of increase of substantive properties in syncretic formations. Thus deep substantivates, as well as typical nouns, have fixed gender forms. The quasi-substantivization is formation by adjective model. The author sets out the problems of their lexicographic description on the example of peripheral feminine nouns. Related groups of peripheral nouns meaning ‘a room’, ‘a place’, ‘a store’, ‘public catering’ ( bulochnaya ‘a bakery’, mantnaya ‘a manta café’ etc.) were under detailed analysis. The author stresses that it is important to consider the emergence of new names according to their discursive characteristics, as a sign of socio-cultural code: the historical, professional, and regional. Some titles ( gazetnaya , bosketnaya , djevichjya ) can be outdated, some are perceived as Sovietisms ( stolovaya , rjumochnaya ). However, this derivational model is a productive one in modern Russian language: there are new adjectival names ( kaljyannaya , pelenal’naya , servernaya ). The author suggests arranging word-formation types when describing quasisubstantivates: the basis for the name of space can be an idea of a person (the room where the person lives, works or rests), an object (premises where the object is placed, produced or sold), an action (premises where the action is carried out). The research material was mainly based on the artworks of classical and modern Russian literature, materials from the Internet media.
