In search of the lost Ithaca. Ulysses as a conceptual character in the art of Joseph Brodsky

The paper analyzes the formation of the figure of Ulysses as a conceptual character of Joseph Aleksandrovich Brodsky’s works. In this case one can trace the main stages of the formation of the conceptual character from the influence of St. Petersburg architecture to the derivation of the key formula for the analysis of the poet’s creative work: «aesthetics is the mother of ethics». The important point here is the similarity of the fates of the Greek character and of the Russian poet, which is gradually expressed in a single poetic image of Ulysses. The gradual specification of the relation to space and the constant improvement of the idea of the influence of space on the person’s creative work, have got a firm enough basis for this conceptual character in the works of Joseph Brodsky. The possibility to follow the brief genesis and to demonstrate the characteristic features of Ulysses as a conceptual character emphasizes the relevance of this study.
