The novella «Three Years» by Anton Chekhov: artist’s intuition, gender psychology, and text grammar
The paper is devoted to the concept of love in Anton Chekhov's novella «Three Years». The artist’s intuition allows the writer to reveal male and female psychological types, gender aspects of the characters’ speech and everyday behaviors, and popular ideas about love. The narrator’s attention is focused on the antithesis of the real and the imagined, sapiens and sensus. They are at the heart of human nature and determine the logic of behavior. The author breaks the myth of romantic love. The conflict resolution process can be defined only by analyzing the pragmatics of the characters’ words. Everything is put in its place by a clearly defined common goal, i.e., the responsibility for the family business and Laptev’s sister’s children. The man becomes rational and firm, and the woman becomes sensual and weak. Although there is no love in its absolute sense, the relationship continues to exist. Chekhov’s love is dynamic, not static. Love is a part of life, not life itself.
