The Russian toponymy of Eastern Siberia in «Reise durch verschiedene Provinzen des Rußischen Reichs» by P. S. Pallas

The work «Reise durch verschiedene Provinzen des Russischen Reichs» remains still insufficiently studied by Russian toponymists. The original of the work in German contributes to a deeper investigation of Russian toponymy than does its well-known translation into Russian. The present paper makes an attempt to reveal the Russian toponyms of Eastern Siberia, their spelling and location. The comparison of the original with the translation has made it possible to find the translator's mistakes in the transliteration of place names into Russian. The toponymy of the work reflects the formation of the Russian toponymy in the region and the changes in the regional toponymical system. The comparison of the toponyms of the XVIII century with the modern place names allows revealing the linguistic and extralinguistic reasons for changes in the regional toponymy.
