The Blue Lady: The text and myth of Barnaul

The paper considers the legend about the Blue Lady, the key one for the Barnaul text: its versions, archetype, and literary adaptations. The best-known version of the legend is presented in the story «The Blue Lady» (1981) by M. I. Yudalevich. The story’s genre inherits the traditions of the historical story and Gothic prose, apprehended through the texts by Pushkin and A. A. Bestuzhev-Marlinsky. This is witnessed by intertext musters and meta-narrative phrases that are analyzed in the paper. The Barnaul text is similar to the Petersburg text in a number of features (hydronium, architecture, the etiological and eschatological myth). The legend of the Blue Lady fixes the main common ground - an archetype of the building victim. The mythological invariant is updated in modern Barnaul neo-romantic prose.
