Image component of the concept ARROGANCE

The author analyzes the image component of the concept ARROGANCE in Russian. The investigation is based on the material from the National Corpus of the Russian Language. The concept, being a complex formation, consists of image and script components. The image part can include different elements, for example, perceptive and cognitive ones. A perceptive image can refer to visual, tactile, taste, sound and smell characteristics, and a cognitive image is formed as a result of metaphorical conceptualization. The perceptive element of the ARROGANCE image includes temperature, tactile, visual and taste characteristics, weight and position in space. ARROGANCE is associated with cold temperature, dark and bleak colors, low sounds or silence, bitter taste, dryness, hardness, big size, isolation in space from other objects and top position. A controversial feature of the perceptive element of the image ARROGANCE is its characterization both with the heavy and light weight. This controversy is traced later in the cognitive part of the image, with ARROGANCE being treated as “rock” and “air” metaphors. The cognitive part of the image ARROGANCE is represented in the metaphors: “arrogance is liquid,” “arrogance is air,” “arrogance is a rock,” “arrogance is an illness,” “arrogance is a wild animal,” “arrogance is a barrier” and “arrogance is a destructive force.” A liquid metaphor is common for the concepts characterizing a person’s emotional state. It is explained by the fact that the concept ARROGANCE is a complex one and not only reflects person’s behavior, attitude to other people and characteristics, but also describes his or her emotional state.
