This book review examines the recent edition of the letters of Academician Viktor Vladimirovich Vinogradov to his wife, Nadezhda Matveevna Malysheva, sent during his exile in Vyatka (Kirov) (1934-1936). Titled “Zhdu peremen v svoyey sud’be”: Pis’ma k zhene iz vyatskoy ssylki (“I am waiting for changes in my fate”: Letters to my wife from Vyatka exile”) (1934-1936), the publication commemorates the 130th anniversary of the world-renowned scholar’s birth. The review provides insight into the complex history of the publication and describes the comprehensive structure of the volume. In addition to the primary corpus of 180 letters, the book features detailed commentaries for each entry, articles regarding the editorial process and Vinogradov’s biography during the 1930s, and appendices that include a periodization of his works and indices of names and chronology. Furthermore, the review offers a survey of the scientific topics Vinogradov pursued during the exile, spanning essential linguistic fields such as morphology, the history of standard Russian, lexicology, lexicography, and the study of the language of literary texts.
