The category of error in Gaito Gazdanov’s short story «The Destiny of Salomea»

The paper is devoted to the examination of Gaito Gazdanov’s short story in the light of one of the basic categories of his art philosophy - the category of error. Analysis is made of the realization of this category at three levels: those of the plot, of the main idea, and of the motive. At the first level, «Salomea plot», the myth about Orpheus and Eurydice as well as that about a dead bridegroom are subjected to transformation. At the motive level the category of error is realized first of all in the image of the heroine who is seen and understood by the characters, by the storyteller, and finally by the reader, but also in the image of Andrew. On the ideological level, the entire axiomatics of the story receives a different interpretation.
