The problem of the criminal's personality along with the problems of a crime as such, its causes, conditions and prevention is major in criminology. Without knowing the personality of the offender effective crime prevention is impossible, since reasons for crime committing lie in the criminal's personality. Usually, the criteria for classification of criminals are their socio-demographic and criminal and legal features: age and gender, occupation, citizenship, the nature of the crime, its committing by a group or by a single person, presence or absence of previous convictions. According to these criteria, the main groups of criminals who committed crimes on the railway transport in the West Siberian Railway can be classified. By socio-demographic features: 1) by gender: men and women. Their ratio is 94.4 % and 5.6 %, respectively; 2) by age: adults and minors. Minors make up 3.1 %, adults 96.9 %, of which those aged 18 to 30 years 52 %, older than 40 years 44 %. 3) by occupation: unemployed (50.8 %), workers (35.1 %), employees (4.1 %), pupils and students (8.3 %), retired (1.7 %). Thus, the main criminologically significant features of the "portrait" of a person committing crimes on railway transport are determined. As a rule, these are young males under the age of 30 with a complete secondary education, urban residents living near the railway, a significant number of them are citizens of other states. These are first-time offenders, primarily thieves, and also those related to drug trafficking with no previous convictions, prone to alcohol and, rarer, drug abuse. Such persons represent five basic personality types, namely: random criminal (8 %); situational criminal (15 %); unstable criminal (42 %); malicious criminal (32 %) and dangerous special criminal (3 %). At the same time, this typology is not exhaustive and there may be other reasons for allocation of types of criminals who commit crimes on railway transport.
