The effectiveness of communication in Russian social interaction: the influence of phonetic factors
The purpose of this article is identification and description of the factors related to the phonetic level that can influence the effectiveness of communication. The material of research was dialogs from Russian social interaction and modern feature films. The study of the material demonstrated existence of phonetic factors that have a positive or negative impact on the effectiveness of communication. They are: 1. Speech pauses and hesitations reduce the effectiveness of communication because they demonstrate uncertainty that can lead to a) feelings of distrust and doubt of the interlocutor; b) suspicion that information is false. 2. The stretching sound is a bilateral factor that has either a positive or a negative impact on the effectiveness of communication. This factor has a positive impact on the effectiveness in the in the following cases: a) it expresses positive emotions; b) it is part of speech play. This factor has a negative impact on the effectiveness when the speaker selects words and plays for time. 3) Pronouncing a word in syllables is a bilateral factor that has either a positive or a negative impact on the effectiveness of communication. This factor has a positive impact on the effectiveness in case when pronouncing a word in syllables is due to objective reasons (background noise, poor quality of telephone service etc.). This factor has a negative impact on the effectiveness in case when pronouncing a word in syllables has an additional logical stress that expresses reproach, discontent of the interlocutor. 4. The rising tone of the voice is a bilateral factor. This factor has a positive impact on the effectiveness in case when the rising tone of the voice expresses positive emotions (joy). This factor has a negative impact on the effectiveness in case when the rising tone of voice expresses negative emotions (anger, fear, aggression, dissatisfaction etc.). 5. Change in the rate of speech is a negative factor that reduces the effectiveness of communication. Acceleration of the rate of speech may be a consequence of: a) strong emotional excitement; b) uncertainty about the correctness of the decision.
