A.N. Ostrovsky and P. Giacometti (a study on the interaction between the original and translated texts in the Russian playwright's artwork)

The article is devoted to the aspect of Ostrovsky's artwork features while his original plays and translations were being made. The study of original and translated text interaction might show an objective picture of the creating process and peculiarity of the playwright's aesthetics. In 1870 Ostrovsky simultaneously wrote a comedy The Forest and translated one of the most famous and the most repertoire Italian melodramas of the 19th century The Civil Death (La morte civile, 1861 ) by Paolo Giacometti (1816-1882). The translated version is entitled The Family of a Criminal. The creative interaction is revealed in the nature of the foreign text arrangement as well as the original and translated texts rapprochement. The interest in Giacometti's play as a melodrama was connected with the artistic quest of a form for creating the heroic on the basis of a person's life in the environment. The melodramatic effect that is a significant part of Ostrovsky's poetics on his way to understanding the ways of penetration into the human psychology was corrected by the social analysis and an insight into a person's behavior and feelings that are explained by the environment and life conditions. Ostrovsky's attention to Giacometti's play was explained by an acute social and political conflict and a psychological elaboration of a character's image, the character that is endowed with moral qualities. In his translation, Ostrovsky emphasizes the psychology of an ordinary person and edits significantly the image of the main character diminishing the romantic stylistics pathos and transferring it into the reality key. At the same time, in his play The Forest, Ostrovsky endows the main character, who is a provincial actor, with some traits of exalted romanticism and emotional rhetoric of his speech. The comparison of the plays The Forest and The Family of a Criminal that Ostrovsky created at the same time shows the process of active interaction of the original artwork and a translator's work that is revealed in the actualization of the problem of enlightening, moral and aesthetic understanding of a person. Thus, there was a process of creative interaction of artistic principles of the national Russian theatre and the European one in Ostrovsky's work. This process led the playwright to creating the artworks that are remarkable for their acute moral and social problems and deep psychological discoveries.
