The technology of the Ob-Yenisei Waterway construction: the first stage of 1882-1886

At the turn of the 20th-21st centuries, ideas of the river transport system are still important in Russia. The lack of land means of communication in the Siberian region complicates the process of territorial resource development, and abundance of rivers and their optimal parameters stimulate the government to develop a program of revival of ideas associated with the construction of a unified intracontinental transport network. The historical and cultural value of the Ob-Yenisei Waterway is interesting for its unique history and is well researched by scientists. However, the research questions concern the lack of accurate qualitative and quantitative data of engineering and technological character. Specifically, one of the main objectives is to identify the complex of the technological design of the Ob-Yenisei Waterway, the process of its construction and typologies of the main functional elements and infrastructure. Analogs were found among engineering and water ways by architectural and restoration techniques. The article presents the first chronological period of 1882-1886. The work engaged the field research of the author to achieve the objective knowledge of the features of hydraulic engineering in Siberia at the end of the 19th century. In addition, the technological aspect of the construction of the Ob-Yenisei Waterway is important for addressing the issue of preservation of its historical and cultural heritage. Knowledge of the construction permission helps to develop the scientifically grounded project of restoration and reconstruction. On this basis, a historical and cultural reserve will be created. For the study of the Ob-Yenisei Waterway, a historical method and restoration of complex principles of knowledge were used. The statistical data and materials of field observations and measurements were compared. Observation and measurement employed architectural restoration analysis. The author concludes that the project of the Ob-Yenisei Waterway is identical to the Mariinsk Waterway which was reconstructed in the 1860s. All gateways are single-chamber, located in the by-pass channels. The dams are in the main river channel. Dimensions and crib grip of the constructions with low dams of chambers were taken as the Mariinsk chambers. Full compliance with the design and planning features of the engineering constructions at the first stage points to a deliberate attempt to make the exploitation of water communications in Siberia by the standards of the European part of Russia.
