On the first head of Glavtyumenneftegaz

The subject of this study is the personal aspect of the history of the oil industry in one of the leading extracting regions, Western Siberia. The success and the growing role of Western Siberia in oil and gas production in the country were accompanied by the creation of heroic images of the participants of these processes. The work involved not only historians, but also journalists, publicists, writers. Historical characters were often glorified by the permitted shift in emphasis in the historical reality. The historical process was narrowed to a small circle of main characters, which eliminated those who could in some way influence the greatness of the created image. This publication aims to highlight the role of A.M. Slepian in the oil industry development in Tyumen Oblast, to show that there is insufficient attention, both in historical literature and in journalism, to those who in difficult conditions began to work on the formation of a new extracting district. Names of people who played a key role in the initial formation of the oil and gas industry in Tyumen Oblast were undeservedly forgotten. Images of heroes were often created by eliminating those who could make the greatness of a specific historical figure less relevant. The author analyzed the historiography of the problem, identified and used a variety of sources, primarily archives, some of which are first introduced. An important role in the writing of the article belonged to talks with the contemporaries of the events referred to in the article. Analysis of the sources for similar situations shows some work to narrow the range of available sources on an undesirable historical character. The article compares two representatives of the oil industry management in the West Siberian oil and gas district; the name of one of them was immortalized in the names of streets, cities, fields, the name of the other was forgotten. The article describes the activities of A.M. Slepian in the first two years of the development of the oil industry in Tyumen Oblast. The author proposes her interpretation of the causes of changing the heads of the oil industry in Tyumen Oblast in 1965; among them is the tragic situation in one of the units of Glavtyumenneftegaz, and personal aspect of relations. In 2015, when public attention turns to the anniversary date in the history of Glavtyumenneftegaz, the name of A.M. Slepian must relate to the history of this company.
