A.N. Maikov's aesthetics and lyrics ofthe 1840s-1850s in I.A. Goncharov's artistic consciousness
The article discusses the question of the meaning of A.N. Maikov's lyrics and his criticism of fine arts in Goncharov's creative realization. Maikov's group had special significance for the aesthetic development of younger Goncharov. Goncharov's art system was taking its shape in the early 1840s, during the crisis of romanticism and the emergence of the new method of realistic image of reality. During 1847, the transition time for Russian literature, Maikov writes critical articles on the exhibition of paintings by I.K. Aivazovsky, in which he points out the movement of fine art to realistic principles and, at the same time, notes the importance of romantic aesthetics and poetics. This interference, dialog with romanticism, can be found in the book of travel essays The Frigate Pallada with a variety of seascapes in it. Issues related to the principles of representation of reality, topical issues of contemporary art and the role of the artist-creator concerned Goncharov as well as Maikov. Maikov's works influenced the way Goncharov depicted his seascapes. During his career the author was writing poems on the marine theme. The romantic image of the sea in his lyrics complemented with the ancient tradition (plasticity of forms, mythological names, images and motifs) sparkled interest in Goncharov, who thought of antiquity as a cultural pattern and who created numerous paintings of the sea, combining the traditions of antiquity, romantic and realistic art in The Frigate Pallada. It is worth mentioning the fact that the deep passion of Goncharov and Maikov in painting indicates the presence of intermedial elements in their works; they both called seascapes a painting, a panorama, a view, noting the beautiful natural images. For example, in the text of travel essays by Goncharov we can find references to the name of the romanticist and marine artist I.K. Aivazovsky, whose manner the narrator imitates in a literary creation of marinas. From romanticists, Goncharov inherited a bright palette of colors, symbolism and psychological characteristics of the element image. The statement of realistic principles by Goncharov included the creative development of artistic experience of romanticists, including Maikov and his sea image. Investigating artistic and critical works by A.N. Maikov provides material for the study of painting, the main artistic and aesthetic method I.A Goncharov used in his works.
