Ethno-cultural adaptation of migrant students in the Jewish Autonomous Oblast

The purpose of the research is to identify the features of ethno-cultural adaptation of foreign students in the Jewish Autonomous Oblast. The sources of information employed in the course of this study were publications in the periodicals of Birobidzhan which cover ethno-cultural events associated with the problems of the regulation of migration in the region as well as personal data from a survey of migrant students of the local university. The development of inter-ethnic communication as a basis of peaceful coexistence of people in today's globalized world is a fundamental concept of the recognition of the equality of all cultures which have an equal right to development. The Jewish Autonomous Oblast is located on the border with another populated country (China), it has a strategic importance for the country. Ethno-cultural adaptation of migrants in the local environment, new for them, happens under the influence of a number of interrelated processes - ethno-cultural self-organization and rational state regulation. Adaptation to a new social status, in the new ethical environment, among migrant students is associated with the problems of personal and financial insecurity. Education of migrant students at schools presents a new set of requirements for the educational and academic work. On the basis of their ethnic and cultural peculiarities, migrant students are most susceptible to the emotional experience of social instability and thus experience a psychological crisis. In case of students and many seasonal labor migrants it is not possible to talk about complete adaptation, only about pseudo-adaptation. Though there are subjective indicators in determining the level of adaptation (interest in Russian culture, Russian language, people), objective indicators are still very few: active intercultural dialogue, involvement in ethno-cultural events. Many migrants adapt at the level of adjustment to the new environment, and nothing more. The author concludes that in order to optimize ethno-cultural adaptation of migrant students, it could be possible to increase hours for additional studies of the Russian language and Russian culture; to actively involve migrant students in the organization of ethno-cultural activities; to have regular consultations with visiting foreign students to provide psychological support in adaptation; to predict regular problems in training and settling down of migrant students in the university through a variety of psychological trainings. Receiving education plays an important strategic role in the adaptation of migrants in the new environment. It can be explained by the fact that the educational system becomes a unique opportunity for a meaningful systematic impact on the process of formation and development of young people life goals.
