Cosmo-Psycho-Logos of England in I. Goncharov's book The Frigate Pallada
The relevance of the article is determined by the current problems of the Russian-English intercultural communication and dialogue of those cultures. I.A. Goncharov significantly contributed to that process by his book The Frigate Pallada. He created a comprehensive and multidimensional image of England. The subjective, original and at the same time multi-component image of England is presented in I. Goncharov's book. The dimensionality and completeness of I. Goncharov's image of England determined the use of G. Gachev's threefold term Cosmo-Psycho-Logos as a methodology of this study. Consequently, the comprehensive image of England in I. Goncharov's book The Frigate Pallada has been considered for the first time. It has been studied from the point of view of imagology conception developed by a famous cultural specialist G. Gachev, who considers national images by means of the threefold term Cosmo-Psycho-Logos, and the literary modelling of geographical space images. It is demonstrated that England is represented by a special system of images which complement each other and form a complete picture. This system embodies Gon-charov's comprehensive conception of the English world. Undoubtedly, the author-and-traveller's journey to a new geographical and cultural space results in a need to model his own fictive and subjective image of that space and present it to the reader. Consequently, real geographical space transforms the most in a literary writing according to the author's subjective conception of it. As previously noted, G. Gachev proposes to perceive unknown geographical space by means of a significant and substantial, in the author's opinion, term Cosmo-Psycho-Logos. This concept is a triple unity for each nation of Cosmo, which is the body or local nature, Psycho, or the people's soul and national character, and Logos, or national spirit, language and logic. It is a cumulative analysis of geographic and climatic conditions of local nature, psychology and national character of the people living here, their language and way of thinking that allows an author of a literary journey to present a coherent and harmonious image of a foreign country. A writer spiritually immerses in a foreign national mindset and existence apart from the physical movement in an unfamiliar space. Therefore, the English Cosmo-Psycho-Logos in Goncharov's perception has been analysed in the article. The sea occupies a central position in the English Cosmos, it surrounds the island from all sides. So, the aquatic origin is quite intense, and dampness, moisture and fog dominate here. English nature completely lost naturalness, the artificial origin prevails in it. England in the middle of the 19th century is an industrialized country having a large number of colonies. In general, Goncharov highlights the powerful zoological, technocratic and capitalist origin displaying his own attitude to the English life, which is virtually equal to trade. Being a humanist, Goncharov does not observe humanism, spiritual and sincere warmth in the English nation. The English Logos confirms that metropolitan values dominate in the English mentality in Goncharov's perception.
