Syntactic repetition as a means of text montage structure
The montage principle of the text structuring establishes a system of subordinate relations between text fragments and leads to the freedom of text connections on other levels. In semiotics, montage is considered as a syntactic orientation for the relationship between the signs of the text. The system of means for montage includes a whole range of different levels of language. The article aims to analyze the functioning of syntactic repetition as a means of implementation of the montage principle of the organization of prose texts by Boris Pasternak. The montage nature of separate fragments of the text which are able to stabilize the coherent structure of the text is discussed. A montage unit is a text fragment which is a polypropositional complex which is organized by syntactic repetition, and represents a subordinate way to categorize mental representations. The analysis of the functioning of syntactic repetition and its transformations in B. Pasternak's prose confirms the main characteristics of the montage principle of the organization of the prose: breaking of the text into fragments; change of the points of view; unmotivated break of the cause-and-effect relations, etc. The research showed that syntactic repetitions and ways of their transformation are pragmatically characterized and are an indicator of interpretative and meta-interpretative processes, which influences their information status. Promotion of one of the components of a repetition occurs in the conditions of focusing on several simultaneously comprehended events as an integrated fragment of reality, and is an indicator of the conceptual importance of a repetition. The transformed syntactic repetition alternately staticizes various modes: visual and acoustic. Therefore, the fragment is developed before the reader in a rhythmic sequence, in certain time and space, and becomes a substantial element of symmetry. Functioning of syntactic repetition promotes combination of several plans in a uniform fragment of the text. It occurs according to a certain scheme: initial spaces promote general characteristics actualized by a repetition, they in turn stabilize the general mixed text space. Promotion focuses attention on several events as an integrated fragment and assumes their simultaneous judgment. Analysis of the prose works by B. Pasternak shows that the transformation of syntactic repetition connected with the replacement of an actant is often followed by the device of distancing or by the effect of time concentration, which makes the text more discrete. Thus, syntactic repetition and its transformations in the text are an indicator of interpretative and meta-interpretative processes and have the stabilization importance not only for a fragment, but also for the complete text organized on the basis of the montage principle.
