Publications of Evgeny Korsh in the Ateney journal (1858-1859)

The article reviews publications of Evgeny Korsh (1809-1897), a Russian publicist, editor, publisher, translator, ideologist of liberal Westernizing ideas, member of the Moscow Circle of Westerners, in the Ateney journal in 1858-1859. Korsh participated actively in the publication of many well-known Russian newspapers and journals, as evidenced by his rich creative heritage, which has so far not been practically investigated and not even fully assembled, and by the memoirs of his contemporaries. The liberal Westernizing ideas of Korsh, which formed in 1841-1842 (the inception of the Moscow Circle of Westerners), were reflected in all his further literary and publishing activities. They were most clearly expressed in his own liberal journal Ateney. Zhurnal kritiki, sovremennoy istorii i literatury (1858-1859). The article describes the history of the creation of Ateney, whose founder and editor was Korsh, and five publications by Korsh: 1. Korsh, E.F. "Vzglyad na zadachi sovremennoy kritiki" (1858, part 1, pp. 61-69); 2. Korsh, E.F. "In-diyskoe vosstanie, ego prichiny i posledstviya" (1858, part 1, pp. 180-190, pp. 261-268, pp. 329-338); 3. Korsh, E.F. "Zametka" (1858, part 2, pp. 146-148); 4. Korsh, E.F. "Shekspir. Perevod N.Kh. Ketchera" (1858, part 4, pp. 160-162); 5. Korsh, E.F. "Novaya russkaya obshchina. Pismo k Redaktoru" (1858, part 5, pp. 328-332, pp. 388-397, pp. 450-459). The article reveals the polemical nature of almost all publications which shows the participation of the author and his journal in the most important public discussions in Russia in the 1850s. For example, Korsh's article "Novaya russkaya obshchina" was a reply to M.N. Katkov's article "Russkaya sel'skaya obshchina" published in Russkiy vestnik. The article also considers the replies to Korsh's publications by the Slavophiles A.I. Koshelev and Yu.F. Samarin (Russkaya beseda). Publication of Ateney was one of the significant moments in the history of the formation of Russian liberalism. The journal reflected the evolution of one of the trends of the Russian liberal thought with its differences from other groups of the time.
