Information needs of the population of the region: a socio-demographic aspect
The article attempts to study, identify and disclose the information needs of the population in the demographic and economic aspects on the example of the inhabitants of Sverdlovsk Oblast. The existing approaches to the definition of information needs in various sciences, including sociological, economic, psychological, were considered. With current theoretical and methodological ideas, the authors' approach to the definition of information needs was given: they are a lack of information which is necessary to sustain individuals, social groups and society in general, implemented by information activities, including search, selection, processing, production and dissemination of information. Information needs stop to be considered in the narrow sense only as a need to search for the necessary information, but acquire an independent and more important significance in connection with the exponential growth of work with information in general, as well as the expansion of the set of tools and ways to meet these needs (information and communication technologies). The authors' model of the formation of information needs that includes a combination of factors (information potential, information environment, features of life), information needs (in receiving and disseminating information), ways and means to meet them (information activities) was proposed. On the basis of the results of a concrete sociological research conducted in Sverdlovsk Oblast in 2014-2015, current information needs of the population were reviewed. It is concluded that the role of the needs not only in the receiving, but also in the dissemination of information among different social groups has increased recently by means of modern information technologies. The use of various means for meeting information needs, such as television, the Internet, etc., was considered. The analysis revealed the influence of economic and demographic characteristics of the inhabitants of Sverdlovsk Oblast on their information needs. It is concluded that the age and settlement characteristics have prior influence on the choice of means and ways to meet information needs.
