Heads of the Department of Physical Education of Tomsk State University. The contribution of Andrey Ya. Kuznetsov, Nikolay N. Biyazi and Boris S. Ganzha to the development of physical culture
The article is devoted to the history of the methodological work on physical education of Andrey Ya. Kuznetsov, Nikolay N. Biyazi and Boris S. Ganzha at Tomsk State University (TSU). Methodology for the military and physical training of students is described on the basis of the analysis of archival documents, periodical press materials, documentary publications and articles of heads of the department. Kuznetsov, Biyazi and Ganzha made a significant contribution to the physical development of future specialists; besides, they promoted preparation of the reserves for the army. The aim of this investigation is to consider changes in tendencies of physical educations teaching at TSU. The first military head of the Tomsk State University was Andrey Kuznetsov. He initiated the introduction of physical training at TSU. He worked to improve the material and household conditions of students life. Nikolay Biyazi became the head of the Military Department in 1928, and he was in charge of physical education. With Biyazi's appointment, the teaching of military disciplines became more scientific and effective at TSU. Physical training gained importance in students' education. Biyazi introduced systematic classes of physical education and sports for students. He raised the question of the introduction of mandatory physical training before TSU Administration. Subsequently, this action improved the material-technical base for sports development at the university. In the 1928-29 fiscal year, the corresponding amounts of money for the organization of physical education were assigned at TSU. The methodology of teaching included a military element. Classes were held not only in the gym but also in the open air. Attendance rates were 85%. Most students approved physical education classes. The consequence of these events was the foundation of the Department of Physical Education at the end of the 1930s. However, the conditions for the organization of students' physical education classes were extremely difficult during the first steps of the department's work. Boris Ganzha, a graduate of the physical education instructor training program, became the first head of the Department of Physical Education. He participated actively in the regional methodological meetings on physical education. However, the work of Ganzha was criticized by TSU Administration because there was no medical supervision, the condition of the gym did not meet the requirements, there was not enough sports equipment. In addition, students often missed classes. In general, it should be noted that, despite all the difficulties, while Kuznetsov, Biyazi and Ganzha worked at TSU, many sports events were held, which influenced the development of sports at the university and in the city. The methodology of teaching changed with the development of new ideological orientations and the improvement of the material-technological base of the university.
