Urban atmosphere: The genesis of the phenomenon and its evolution in social sciences
The article aims to clarify the contradictory nature of the urban atmosphere phenomenon by defining its nuances and the genesis of its emergence in social sciences. Such an approach helps to conceptualize the phenomenon and leads to the creation of a future urban atmosphere model suitable for further operationalization. The research includes a theoretical analysis of works on the urban atmosphere phenomenon in the field of sociology, phenomenology, management, literature, cultural geography. The article has two parts. The first part describes the differences between urban atmosphere nuances, namely, ambiance and atmosphere, and defines them. The second part gives information about the origin of ambiance and atmosphere and their development from ancient times to this day. At the end of the article, the necessity of taking into account urban atmosphere nuances, when dealing with the model creation, is argued. According to the analysis of urban atmosphere nuances, atmosphere (as one of its components) is invisible but magnetic, which makes the urban space attractive for living bodies. Ambiance is produced by atmosphere, but has more pronounced qualitative properties which characterize the urban space. Ambiance influences our lifetime by mediating the relations between living bodies. The consideration of the urban atmosphere genesis in different research fields showed that atmosphere has been studied mainly within natural science and literature as a descriptive quantitative phenomenon aimed to define the space of existence for living bodies. Ambiance, full of qualitative and tangible characteristics, appeared later and has been borrowed by a number of research disciplines (sociology, psychology, economics, management) as it can be analyzed and used in practice. The author makes a conclusion that urban atmosphere is a complex phenomenon consisting of atmosphere and ambiance. The latter is a qualitative continuation 108 of the former, and their characteristics should not be ignored when conceptualizing the phenomenon. The analysis has also shown that the functioning principles of physical atmosphere and ambiance can be applied in the model creation. It is connected with the absence of an explanation of urban atmosphere and ambiance functioning by social scientists. The application of these principles from physics will provide a full scheme of urban atmosphere components interrelation and interaction.
