The Ontology of the Network Society and the Culture of Digital Nomads: Methodological Approaches

The article tries to resolve the problem of the lack of a relevant methodology for systematic studying the culture of digital nomadism as one of the most impactful manifestations of the modern network information and communication society that is becoming global. The problem occurred due to a number of factors: the evolution of the Internet, the latest computer and digital technologies; widespread wireless communications; and the development of transport systems. Digital nomadism is a sociocultural practice that has two main characteristics: constant geographical mobility and permanent connection to the Net. Unlike other practices of the new century, digital nomadism covers all areas of social activity of individuals representing the lifestyle of a new nomadic era. The aim of the article is to reveal the methodological potential of the cultural anthropology concept by Roland Posner and the semiotics of culture concept by Yuri Lotman when applied to describe the culture of digital nomads. In order to reach the aim, the structure of the methods mentioned above was analyzed, as well as their objective and conceptual, operating and regulatory, and logical elements, when used in the context of the culture of digital nomads. The studies revealed that cultural anthropology and the semiotics of culture allow to consider the culture of digital nomads as a hierarchy of a specific sign systems that are used by digital nomads in order to develop and maintain their identity that is mainly characterized by their permanent mobility and connection to the Net. They also use it to achieve their goals in the information and communication society. An attempt is made to describe the specific nature of the sign systems through describing their basic elements, such as signs, codes, media, artefacts, and artifacts and mediafacts of the culture of digital nomads. The results of the research show that the methods of cultural anthropology along with the semiotic analysis as given in the concepts by Roland Posner and Yuri Lotman provide the tools to describe the specifics of the culture of digital nomads as an integral evolving phenomenon and describe the mechanisms of its globalization.
