The Peculiarities of the Postmodern Literary Remake (Based on the Short Stories Collection Reader, I Married Him Edited by T. Chevalier)
The article is devoted to the study of the Postmodern remake. The aim of the research is elaboration of the algorithm of the literary analysis of remakes. The basic research methods are the close reading method, the method of intertextual analysis, the hermeneu-tic and typological approaches. During the research the following stages of the remake analysis were singled out: (1) the identification of one or several authentic texts; (2) the juxtaposition of the authentic text and the remake; (3) the search for similarities to the authentic text at different levels of the work of fiction; (4) the identification of stylization elements in the text; (5) the systematization of the remake's basic characteristics and the determination of its functional and semantic load. The short stories collection under analysis is a variety of works of fiction whose authors make an attempt to deconstruct and reconsider Ch. Bronte's novel Jane Eyre. It gives an opportunity to trace a great number of the remake's types, e.g., remake-motif, remake-parody, remake-dystopia. The aforementioned algorithm of the remake analysis enabled the author of the article to systematize and complement the existing classifications of the remake. In regard to an authentic work of fiction, it is advisable to point out a monoreferential remake that is based on one original text and a polyreferential one that is based on two or more texts. With regard to its complexity and inner organization, any remake can be single-level (e.g., remake-motif) and multilevel, i.e., one that implies a complex transformation of the initial text. According to the remake author's creative goal, it is possible to single out such types of the remake as imitation, addition and transformation. The author of the remake can intentionally imitate the style of the original work of fiction (e.g., stylized remakes), but add some episodes to the storyline and transform the genre of the authentic text, e.g., A. Niffenegger's story. It is advisable to refer the Postmodern remake to the category of transformation remakes taking into account its deconstructive pathos and intellectual game with the reader. The characteristic feature of the Postmodern remake is the intentional reconstruction of the formal-substantive component of the original text, which is achievable due to the inclusion of intertextual and metatextual fragments in the remake, permanent references to the authentic text, the distortion of the space-time continuum, and the purposeful disruption of the causal relationship (F. Prose's Mirror). The Postmodern remake is primarily aimed at a game-like transformation of the original text's form and structure. The author of such a remake does not aim to interpret the original story of conflict and express his/her attitude to the moral issues posed in the text. S/he rather aims to complicate the work of fiction, and addresses an intelligent reader who is capable of evaluation of the intricate author's tricks.
