The article describes the activities of Tomsk State University Dissertation Councils K 063.53.18 and K 212.267.01 for specialties 07.00.07 - Ethnography, Ethnology and Anthropology and 07.00.10 - History of Science and Technology. The source base of the article is dissertation records, in particular, transcripts of meetings. Dissertation Council K 063.53.18 was formed at the initiative of the dean of the Faculty of History, Professor A.T. Topchiy, and Professors V.M. Kulemzin and N.V. Lukina in 1999 with the aim of developing ethnographic research. By the time the dissertation council was formed, the ethnographic tradition had long existed at the Faculty of History of Tomsk University. Ethnographic research was carried out in several directions: the study of the Khanty and the peoples of Tomsk Oblast that did not belong to the indigenous peoples of Western Siberia: Ukrainians, Estonians, Germans; the study of Altai Burkhanism as well as the experience of the Russian state in the field of interethnic relations. Significant results were achieved in the field of studying the history of higher education and science. In 1994, at the initiative of Professor S.F. Fominykh, a research and training laboratory "Siberia: Historical Traditions and Modernity" was established. On its basis, five volumes of the biographical dictionary Professors of Tomsk University were published from 1996 to 2013. During the work of Dissertation Councils K 063.53.18 and K 212.267.01, dissertations on ethnography devoted to the Khanty, the Selkups, the Khakass were defended. The dissertation councils acted as pioneers in defending dissertations on the history of science and technology. The councils worked in the context of the socioeconomic transformations of the late 20th - early 21st centuries, and this context was actualized at the meetings of the councils, primarily in the form of questions from members of the councils to dissertationists. The meetings of the councils also became a reflection at the micro-level of discussions held in the scientific community. During their work, the councils significantly influenced the formation of the historical scientific community in Siberia and in Russia in general. For the years of their work, the councils have formed a wide range of leading organizations. Council members also acted as research advisors of dissertations and opponents. Currently, Dissertation Council D 212.267.18 is one of three councils for specialty 07.00.10 - History of Science and Technology (Historical Sciences). The authors of the article claim that Dissertation Councils K 063.53.18 and K 212.267.01 made a significant contribution to the development of Russian historical science in the transition period.
