A Bilingual Perspective on the Perceptual Component of Word Semantics in Russian: The RuWordPerception Psycholinguistic Database
This article describes the structure of a psycholinguistic database (RuWordPerception) that contains ratings of 200 nouns, 200 verbs, and 200 adjectives on five perceptual modalities elicited from Turkic-Russian bilinguals through the use of psycholinguistic questionnaires. The created database draws upon three highly debated research topics in linguistics, namely: embodied cognition, linguistic relativity, and the structure of bilingual mental lexicon. The basic idea behind embodied cognition states that there is a strong connection between our perceptual system and cognition (and, by extension, between perception and language). By including modality rating data, the database provides researchers with means to investigate the perceptual component of word semantics at greater length from a more objective standpoint. Ratings on visual, gustatory, auditory, olfactory, and haptic modalities were obtained through online and paper-based questionnaires that employed a 7-point Likert scale. According to the hypothesis of linguistic relativity, the world view of a person is affected by the language they speak. The presented database addresses this question by providing a list of all possibly relevant formal aspects of linguistic units. Thus, words in the database are separated into categories by their morphological (number and types of morphemes, lexico-grammatical category, transitivity, reflexivity, verbal aspect), derivational (derivational base and morphemes), lexico-semantic (lexico-semantic group), and other properties (frequency, length). Finally, the problem of the interaction between two languages in the mind of a bilingual is addressed through the lens of sociolinguistic practices. As part of a broader project, participants were administered a detailed sociolinguistic questionnaire that comprised 41 questions relating to language use in childhood and at the present time, as well as a Language Experience and Proficiency Questionnaire, that helped assess participants' current exposure to the language and its level. The integration of the current database with the Russian-Turkic Bilingual Corpus allows its users to compare data from the database with the data contained in the speech corpus. In conclusion, the presented database aims to provide researchers with a powerful tool to investigate the delicate interplay between the linguistic, psycholinguistic, and sociolinguistic properties of Russian words in the minds of Turkic-Russian bilinguals.
