Psychological Features of Interrogating High-Value Detainees in the United States
The article reveals the nature of the phenomenon that fundamentally determines the effectiveness of the most common investigative action - interrogation of a suspect. The range of problems affects methodological, historical, forensic, and psychological aspects. The result of the study was a model of a tactical and forensic impact, which has not only theoretical, but also practical and applied value. The subject of the research is the complex of backbone elements of the phenomenon of influence as a unique form of forensic interaction during interrogation. In the study, the general scientific methods were used: analysis, synthesis, systemic and structural. The following special scientific methods were used: statistical analysis, comparative historical analysis, expert assessment. The article contains a number of the following conclusions. In modern forensic sciences the experience of conducting an interrogation in the USA is notable, as the High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group (HVDIG) was created in 2010. The HVDIG category includes people suspected of having relations with terrorist organizations and international criminal groups. The article describes some psychological features of interrogating those people. The HVDIG has funded over 100 projects on social impact tactics, the influence of interpreters on obtaining information, cognitive interviews, scientifically proven tried-and-true methods for detecting deceptive statements, etc. Interrogation is based on a team approach. Some investigators, an analyst, an interpreter and a few experts are involved in the activity. The team members observe an interrogation through Gesell's mirror, providing the investigators with immediate feedback. The team put forward a hypothesis about the psychotype of the subject under an interrogation, their communicative behavior features, and make a model for further effective communication. It is important to encourage the subject to create an appropriate perception of the investigator, the purpose of the interrogation, its objective and apparently relative outcomes. The HVDIG actively implement priming as a tool of investigation. In this context the term “priming” receives new content, influencing the increase of recognition in embarrassing thoughts and behaviour. The location and the entire context of interrogation are structured in such a way that the subject is inspired to report valid data they previously did not intend to share. The HVDIG experience shows that the most effective interrogation methods to obtain relevant information are non-violent, based on trusting relationships and psychologically valid communication techniques.
