Migration Behavior of Russian University Students Based on Digital Footprint Data
The article presents the results of a study of the migration behavior of student youth based on digital footprints data. The attention is focused on educational migration. Seven universities in the Central, Ural and Siberian Federal Districts were selected for the study. Monitoring of young people’s educational and work trajectories by correlating and comparing all user-specified locations makes it possible to single out the five most popular variants of typical behaviors (“region of the university as a transit”, “stayed in the city of the university”, “left for another city from one’s native city”, “returned to one’s hometown”, “no migration”). Migration activity differs at different ages in its scale and motives. The authors of the study revealed the peculiarities of educational and labor migration of young people from the selected universities: universities are often considered by students as a transit point between home and the labor market; offers on the market of educational services do not fully correspond to the preferences of young people, and they are forced to receive education in another city; also, there are cities that are attractive both for education and for employment, etc. The study showed the need to apply a qualitative method in studying this problem and to use an expanded information field, including data on youth mobility in regions with different economic levels, the presence of campuses, and others conditions and factors influencing the migration behavior of young people. Using a digital footprint on social networks allows obtaining extensive information about movements from a large number of users without resorting to traditional methods.
