Linguodidactic peculiarities of using artificial intelligence technologies in teaching and learning a foreign language
Modern linguodidactics is meant to take into account the fact that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have become an integral part of our lives, as well as the fact that the modern field of language learning is no longer limited to the traditional or formal educational environment. In this regard, the research aims to study and systematically analyze the linguodidactic features of using various AI technologies in teaching and learning a foreign language with the reliance on the advanced domestic and foreign theoretical and practical research of using modern AI technologies in foreign language classes. Using a comprehensive research methodology integrating the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) methodology, various relevant theoretical and empirical research methods the key modern AI technologies used in teaching and learning a foreign language were analyzed and described from the perspective of linguodidactics. These technologies include: personalized learning materials, machine translation tools, AI text assistants, chatbots, AI-based software platforms and applications for language learning, intelligent learning systems, adaptive and intelligent systems for collaborative learning support, intelligent virtual reality. Based on the analysis, an assessment of the impact, advantages and disadvantages of using AI in teaching a foreign language is given, as well as the prospects, challenges and risks of further development and distribution of these technologies. Upon the results of the study, the authors conclude that the integration of AI into the educational process provides a new quality of both foreign language acquisition and teaching. AI-based technologies and tools help to create a complex cognitive educational environment in which learning can be more personalized and teaching can become more flexible and adaptive. AI technologies can contribute to the formation and development of students' knowledge and skills that are necessary today in a modern technologically advanced society and, no doubt, will be in demand in the future. Teachers of foreign languages should contribute not only to the acquisition of students' knowledge of a foreign language. Due to the massive spread of AI technologies, they are meant to develop their students' natural intelligence and skills that are becoming particularly relevant in the 21st century, such as critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration. In order to qualitatively and effectively integrate the considered technologies into the daily educational process of learning foreign languages, modern teachers themselves need to form, timely update and constantly modernize their own knowledge, skills and mastery of AI technologies. The authors declare no conflicts of interests.
