The last English translation of A Writer's Diary by Fyodor Dostoevsky: A systematic description
The article explores the contents and structure of the last English translation of A Writer's Diary by Fyodor Dostoevsky, which was made by Gary Saul Morson in 2003. It is an abridged version of a full English translation of A Writer's Diary made by Kenneth Lantz in 1993. The relevance of the study is due to the interdisciplinary character of modern literary criticism and significant gaps in the study of English translations of Dostoevsky's journalism and their reception in the English-speaking world. Based on the analysis of Morson's introduction, which is a certain meta text of the abridged translation, the essential principles that were used by the editor to "cut" A Writer's Diary have been revealed. Thus, in Morson's opinion, the abridged translation is not intended to be regarded as an end-to-end creative work, it is just the convenient way to make English readers familiar with Dostoevsky's A Writer's Diary. It is the reason why one of the principles to cut the book is to remove the repetitions in Dostoevsky's reflections. The analysis of the structure of the abridged translation of A Writer's Diary also demonstrates the fact that the main focus of this version is on the fictional writings. In addition, Morson conveys the chapters which are thematically connected to the fictional writings presented in A Writer's Diary, thus giving English readers the opportunity not only to regard them in much broader context of the entire work, but also to trace the link between the j ournalism and fictional writings within the creative Dostoevsky's laboratory. A Writer's Diary is considered a main work in Dostoevsky's journalism which revealed his talent as an original philosopher and political thinker. The 1876-1877 issues are the most politics-oriented. However, the 1876 January issue is the only one that is fully conveyed. In Morson's opinion, it is this issue that reflects the creative idea of Dostovsky. According to this idea, the journalistic and fictional elements are inseparably linked. Therefore, the following issues of A Writer's Diary are conveyed in part. Thus, the comprehensive description of the reality presented by Dostoevsky in A Writer's Diary, his understanding of the world order when the fate and individual life of a person are interwoven into broader cultural, historical and socio-political contexts, are not conveyed because the internal philosophical and aesthetic links of A Writer's Diary are partially destroyed. It is supposed that the context and the structural peculiarities of the last English translation of A Writer's Diary indicate a certain tension in terms of reception of this creative piece by Dostoevsky in English-language culture.
