An up-to-date vector of studying the history of climate

The aim of this article is to identify current trends in the study of the social and political aspects of climate history. Historians' growing interest in this issue is driven by the urgency of responding to climate challenges, the accumulation of data on global warming, the influence of environmental ideas on public consciousness, as well as social demand and political circumstances. A further contributing factor is the disruption of temporal forms, methods, and mechanisms governing the interaction between society and culture, stemming from a kind of disconnect between natural and historical time. The intensification of international cooperation on climate, the expanding body of climate knowledge, and the politicization of climate issues have collectively influenced the direction of scholarly research. The focus has shifted from examining climate's impact on economic and everyday life toward identifying historical evidence and sequences of events related to anthropogenic impacts on the climate system. The authors identify and analyze three main strands of research in climate history that have emerged in recent years: general works on climate history in relation to social and political processes; research in historical theory and philosophy; and publications on major international climate events, treaties, and policy actors. Contemporary researchers increasingly seek to connect historical inquiry with the specific climate policy objectives of various state and nonstate actors. The dominant research vector is oriented less toward discerning historical patterns and more toward examining how climate discourse evolves and how the forms and strategies of actors engaged in combating climate change develop. Nevertheless, given that climate remains first and foremost a natural phenomenon, it is this fundamental understanding that must be preserved as the foundation for further study and for the development of a genuinely scientific history of climate. The authors would like to thank M.V. Sushchinskaya, chief librarian of the branch departments of the Gorky Scientific Library of St. Petersburg State University, for her assistance in working with bibliometric resources The authors declare no conflicts of interests.
