William Wordsworths creative work in the literary-critical understanding and interpretation of E.F. Korsh

For the first timethe article examines the activity of E.F. Korsh as a Russian interpreter of William Wordsworths literary creative work, gives a detailedanalysis of E.F. Korshs article Felicia Gimmens and William Wordsworth, published in Biblioteka Dlya Chteniya in 1835, and poeticaltranslation of Wordsworths famous ballad We are Seven (1798). While considering the article the attention is paid not only topeculiarities of E.F. Korshs understanding of the personality and creative work of the English poet, reasons of the transformation of hisliterary world, but also to the detailed analysis of the prosaic word for word translation of Wordsworths texts included in the article, inparticular, fragments of the poems To My Sister (1798), Ode: Intimations of Immortality (1804, published in 1807), and a full textof the poem Lines Suggested by a Portrait from the Pencil of F. Stone (1834, published in 1835). The authors also note the significanceof many characteristic literary details of Wordsworths poetic descriptions, which showed the creators desire to unite with nature,for E.F. Korsh. E.F. Korshs translation of Wordsworths ballad We are Seven is examined in comparison with the other translationsof this poem, made in the 1830s-1840s by I.I. Kozlov and Ya.K. Grot, the authors note the general tendency of all translators to adaptthe original poem of the English author to the Russian reality, at the same time the preference is given to I.I. Kozlovs translation, fullyshowing the inner atmosphere of the English original, while Korshs translation is characterized by accidental additional literary details,strange for the spirit of the original. The preparation and publication of the article and translation, made by E.F. Korsh in different periodsof time, show that the interest of the Russian specialist of literature to the creative activity of his English contemporary was notspontaneous, but it was preserved within a certain, though short, period of time.
