Interdisciplinary foundation of design

Design as a cultural phenomenon is exposed to uninterrupted transformations; it is unstable, incomplete and fundamentally does not allow unambiguous determination. With the development of equipment and technology, with the changes that model a new way of social and cultural life determination of design expands, deepens, and changes. Design as a cultural phenomenon is dependent on the time of the era in which it operates, exists. Requests of time, the needs of societies define the challenges design faces. In the industrial age, the symbol of the time was the development of industrial production, and today, in the age of information, intellectual work is valuable aimed at the production or conversion of information. In accordance with this, in the industrial society designers worked to create artistically expressive objective environment, and in the network society the work with information in digital or virtual-media environment is at the peak of the relevance. In the industrial era the leader of the design culture was industrial design, but with the onset of the information age the position of the front man belongs to graphic design. Current changes in the socio-cultural processes indicate the formation of a new paradigm, conditioned by the change of the industrial society into a society of information and networks. In connection with the development of science and technology, with a gradual transition from the rule of machine production to the production of information, from market economy to information economy, from the culture of the industrial society to the culture of the network society, the problems that accompany the human existence are changing. The paradigmatic shift does not only entail a transformation of social and cultural nature, but also destroys the existing ways of development of specific cultural or social phenomena. In the field of design the main goals and problems are shifting to other coordinate planes that actualise and enhance interdisciplinary connections. The novelty of the proposed research consists in the analysis of interdisciplinary foundation of design as a cultural phenomenon in the industrial society and in the network society. Interdisciplinary foundation of design is based on the designer's thinking, which includes the collaboration of imagery, system, and innovation. With the historical development of design the number of disciplines that are necessary for the designer to master in the process of design education is expanding. The foundation of the interdisciplinary in design is the co-operation of creative and technical thinking and design, backed by competencies in the field of humanities and applied sciences, the range and direction of which is determined by the specific project.
