On November 15-16, 2018, the Law Institute of the National Research Tomsk State University held the All-Russian Conference "Problems of the Theory of Punishment and Penal Law", dedicated to the 120th anniversary of legal education in Siberia, the 95th anniversary of an outstanding Russian penitentiarist, Doctor of Law, Professor A.L. Remenson (1923-1985) and the 40th anniversary of the Department of Penal (Corrective Labour) Law and Criminology. The Conference gathered leading specialist in penitentiary law, lecturers of the Law Institute of the National Research Tomsk State University, Kuzbass Institute of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, Tomsk Institute of Advanced Training for the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, employees of the penitentiary system, judicial and law enforcement agencies, and members of the public. The article analyses the conference presentations on the history of the Department of Penal (Corrective Labour) Law and Criminology at Tomsk University and the Tomsk Scientific School of Penal (Corrective Labour) Law. The author covers the main results of the Department of Penitentiary Law and Criminology of the Law Institute of the National Research Tomsk State University, with particular attention paid to the traditions of scientific and educational activities, including the Tomsk school research program, prompting young researchers to reflect on axiological bases of their own research activities, and the formation of ethical norms and rules of research in young scientists. The author also analyses the problems that became the subject of discussion at the Conference, among which are general theoretical issues of criminal punishment and its execution, problems of imprisonment, and criminalisation and execution of noncustodial sentences. Special emphasis is laid on the significance of the Conference for theoretical understanding of the problems of penitentiary, criminal and penal law, the need to improve existing legislation and law enforcement, while preserving and developing traditions and values of Tomsk school of penal (corrective labour) law.
