Professor Sergey A. Eliseev: Scholarly, research management, and teaching contributions
The scholarly interests of Sergey Aleksandrovich Eliseev encompassed a broad spectrum of criminal law and criminological issues, focusing on the history and theory of liability for property crimes, the causes of property-related criminality, and the profile of the profit-driven offender. His research provided a definitive conceptualization of property crimes, analyzed their various typologies, and examined the placement of corresponding legal provisions within the Special Part of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Professor Eliseev established key directions for improving the legislative framework governing property offenses, which included optimizing the statutory description of the objective elements of crimes, refining the legislative definition of their subjective elements, and enhancing the system of qualifying features. He traced the evolution of legislative approaches and elucidated the underlying logic in structuring criminal law prohibitions that establish liability for property crimes. His analysis was notably comprehensive, examining not only current Russian criminal law but also its historical antecedents from the 11th-17th centuries, the Imperial period, and the Soviet era. Professor Eliseev's fruitful research management and organizational contributions is also highlighted. He provided successful supervision for several candidate and doctor dissertations (Ph.D. equivalents). He served as the academic secretary of the Tomsk State University Dissertation Council for candidate and doctoral defenses and frequently acted as an official opponent. His editorial contributions included membership on the editorial board of the Tomsk State University Journal of Law and several academic collections, such as Materials of the Russian Congress of Criminal Law (Moscow), Legal Problems of Strengthening Russian Statehood (Tomsk), and Russian Jurisprudence: A Tribune for Young Scholars (Tomsk). Furthermore, he led research projects for students, master's candidates, and postgraduate researchers. His teaching legacy is equally distinguished. Professor Eliseev delivered lectures and conducted seminars for the "Criminal Law: Special Part" course. He was proactive in integrating active learning methods and computer technologies into the educational process. He also authored and published a range of textbooks, study guides, and lecture courses for undergraduate and master's programs, which were utilized not only at Tomsk State University but also at other higher education institutions across Siberia. The author declares no conflicts of interests.
