Role of merchants and charity in formation and development of Tomsk
This article discusses the charity of Tomsk merchants, describes their significant contribution to the development of Tomsk. In pre-revolutionary Russia the merchantry was a part of the national view of the world, it was one of the classes that had a significant influence on the economic, social and cultural life. Charity and philanthropy were the prerogative of the wealthiest strata of society who could afford to spend significant means in order to address pressing social problems, to promote educational projects and to support the arts. It is in the second half of the 19th - the pre-revolutionary years of the 20th centuries that the traditions of merchants, charity and philanthropy took shape.
