Speech culture in the work of military interpreters

The article examines the speech culture of military interpreters. Speech culture is understood as a combination of qualities which have the greatest effect on a person taking into account a concrete speech circumstance and in accordance with a set task. The article reviews the work of military interpreters and its influence on speech culture. Objective and subjective factors are determined which have an influence on the culture of speech activities of officers, as a complex social phenomenon. The speech culture of an officer is a system of knowledge, skills and abilities to realize the results of thought with the help of language and speech and verbal influence on personnel with the aim of successfully carrying out constitutional tasks for enabling the security of the Fatherland. Having a command of speech culture is an ability, in a determined context, to select necessary words in accordance with their lexical meaning, take account of the laws of collocation of words with their stylistic use, and the ability to correctly pronounce and accentuate the word. The experience of the past decade shows that the world is becoming more and more multi-polar and unpredictable, and for its stabilization interaction between specialists of different states is required, including military interpreters, whose necessity in the given sphere is steadily increasing. The most important requirement for a military interpreter is having background knowledge on the described subject. A conclusion is made that receiving corresponding background knowledge is one of the most important elements in preparing military interpreters, because it is background knowledge together with a command of military terminology that distinguishes a military interpreter, professionally, from military specialists in other spheres. Military interpreters must have corresponding knowledge before arriving at their place of service, which means a necessity of including in the curriculum courses on speech culture with real practice. Modern military operations have demonstrated the existence of a problem of cross-cultural communication and, consequently, a great requirement in military interpreters for its solution. Correspondingly, in today's conditions of increasing cross-cultural interaction of the armed forces of different countries, it is necessary to pay greater attention to teaching speech culture to military interpreters who are an important link between states and cultures.
