The role of cultural institutions in preserving cultural heritage (the example of cinema in Kazan)

Fund of the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan treasures the documentary called «The capture of Kazan in 1918». Except this film a few dozen of newsreels shot on the 1930-40th years' films in Kazan are kept here. They are «Tatarstan», «Soviet Tatarstan», «Interrepublican newsreel», «Friendship of Peoples», and the first full-length documentary «Tatarstan. The country of four rivers». The former director of the museum V.M. Dyakonov told about how the National Museum received these movies and newsreels in his book «The search, meetings, discoveries». And fifteen years ago the Central State Archive of Audiovisual Documents of the Republic of Tatar-stan' experts headed by director S. N. Gorokhov started researches of this film archive. All precious materials on flammable film were transferred to digital versions, so these experts preserved film documents for today and for the future. The article tells the story of the film «The Capture of Kazan in 1918» shot by the operator Eduard Tisse, who later worked with director Sergei Eisenstein. Quotes from his diary of that time are given in the article. The article cites the article from the local periodicals about the premiere of the film in the cinema of Kazan. Also the article provides the information about the shooting of the first full-length film made in the Republic of Tatarstan named «Tatarstan. The Country of four rivers». The film was shot by Tatar branch of «Vostokkino» and was dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Tatar Republic. The article gives the information published in the Moscow newspaper «Kino» and the local newspaper «Krasnaya Tatariya» about one of the first public display received great public interest. Kazan newsreel studio got its second birth in June, 1961. And in December, 1962, the Commission of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR accepted contemporary film storage into exploitation. All films shot by studio stored there. The third director of the studio M.M. Mikhailov ordered to digitize all the movies on film kept in film storage. The Central State Archive of Audiovisual Documents of the Republic of Tatarstan' specialists headed by director S.N. Gorokhov are digitizing these films for several years. So precious film documents are being preserved for the history on such a way.
