The musical life of pre-revolutionary Russian province in the «personal dimension». The source aspect

An important source for studying the historical past of musical culture of the Russian province are the documents of a personal origin - letters, diaries, memoirs, autobiographies, notebook. Interest are the materials, the authors are both musicians - composers, performers, critics, music educators, and a wide range of music lovers, including representatives of different social backgrounds, different professional - writers, artists, public figures and representatives of the local administration, patrons, owners of musical theatres, orchestras, etc., the aristocracy and the merchants, relatives, friends, colleagues of musicians. Of particular value are the personal materials of Russian classical composers of the nineteenth century: most of them were in varying degrees connected with Russian province of origin, circumstances of personal or creative life. Evidence professionals give special weight and significance to the study of musical culture of the province. A variety of factual material about the provincial musical life, its aesthetic, cultural and historical assessment found in the memoirs, autobiographies, notes by M. Glinka and N. Rimsky - Korsakov, P. Tchaikovsky and S. Taneyev, S. Rachmaninov and R. Gliere. To fully characterize the musical life of the province not less significant the contribution of local composers amateurs, performers enthusiasts, whose work has not crossed the framework of local cultural traditions - A. Ulybyshev (Nizhny Novgorod), P. Vorotnikov (Elizavetgrad), U. Golitsyn (Yaroslavl). Referring to the documents of personal origin as a source of analysis of the musical culture of the Russian provinces, it is necessary to consider that due to genre specific they are of varying degree of reliability. Letters, diaries usually time closer to the events than memories, travel, which is often written from memory. The value of this group of sources is determined by the personality part of the history of musical culture, as diaries, letters, memoirs - the basic material for the study of the biography and creativity of the musician. The distinctive feature of this group of sources is that in them the events of social life are described along with events of personal biography, hence the combination of the facts of the events described with the author's assessment, emotional, sometimes subjective. Along with this, personal documents characterize musical life in all its versatility, draw not only the author but also the surrounding artistic atmosphere, the events of musical life - all that music fills everyday culture.
